GIVE UP

Lent is the time for trimming the soul and scrapping the sludge off a life turned slipshod.
Lent is about taking stock of time, even religious time.
Lent is about exercising the control that enables us to say no to ourselves
so that when life turns hard of its own accord we have the stamina to yes to its
twists and turns with faith and hope. . . .
Lent is the time to make new efforts to be what we say we want to be.

~Sister Joan Chittister (1935 – ) The Rule of Benedict: Insight for the Ages

WHAT ARE YOU GIVING UP FOR LENT? I always thought that it would be interesting to give up being slow or borrowing things.  Post a comment about what you’re going without, and why, and if you plan to bring it back in April.  Some random possibilities of things to give up:

  1. Cursing
  2. Sugar
  3. Yelling at your kids
  4. Junk food
  5. Meat
  6. Cleaning house
  7. Not cleaning house
  8. Being (a) _________
  9. Eating out
  10. Panhandling
  11. Giving to panhandlers
  12. Kleptomania
  13. Sloth
  14. Envy
  15. Greed

  1. I’m giving up on giving up. LOL. Actually, I’ll put a check mark next to sugar. Me and Ellen. Sistas! She’d better not flake on me. I’ve given up cleaning the house long ago so you can just add a permanent check to that one. :)

Not a bad idea actually. Slow overall change is better than quick restarts. Best to get our sugar in ways other than food, anyway.
