SHRIMP ON THE BARBIE

To read without reflecting, is like eating without digesting.  ~Francis Bacon (1561 – 1626)

NO MO GMO
In the first judicial ruling on genetically modified (GM) plants, food advocacy blog Eat, Drink & Be, reports the Supreme Court lifting of the ban on GM alfalfa seeds. They write:

“The USDA seems to be paying a lot more attention to the short-term requirement of Monsanto rather than the long-term welfare of farmers who could lose their livelihoods,” said Andrew Kimbrell, a lawyer for the Center for Food Safety, to Reuters. “Their job is to protect US agriculture, not to protect Monsanto. They seem to have gotten it backwards.”  The Supreme Court stipulates that limited planting can be done, with the stipulation “impending environmental review”.

Sounds like an unsound jurisprudence directive:  act now, think later.  The Department of Agriculture is being asked to impose a ban, overturning the court’s ruling. If ever prayers were needed, now is the time.  And letters to your elected officials, giving voice to well-founded concerns about allowing organic-averse GMOs into the food supply.

15 WAYS TO GRILL SHRIMP
In a quandry about what to serve for the Fourth of July festivities?  Try grilling shrimp.  Soak long wooden skewers in water to keep them fireproof, spear some large marinated crustaceans, and sear over a medium wood fire, turning once & keeping flames at bay.  For best results, marinate large uncooked, peeled & deveined shrimp for at least an hour or two, better if overnight.  If you don’t mind having your companions work for their dinner, marinate and cook in their shells.  Marinate in grip-lock bags, then bring them out to the grill and use the marinade to baste the shrimp as they cook, especially if you’ve cheated on the marinade time.  They won’t take long to grill – just 2 to 3 minutes each side, depending upon their size – when they’ve curled up they’re done!  Try a few of these marinade ideas, or concoct your own:

  1. Olive oil, balsamic vinegar & dried thyme
  2. Olive oil, red wine, minced garlic & peppercorn
  3. Olive oil & hot sauce
  4. Olive oil, shallots, brandy & lemon zest
  5. Olive oil, crushed fennel seeds
  6. Olive oil, lime juice, cilantro
  7. Peanut oil, lemon juice & dill
  8. Peanut oil, tumeric, cumin & cayenne pepper
  9. Sesame oil, soy sauce & minced garlic – sprinkle with white & black sesame seeds
  10. Sesame oil & honey – after grilling, sprinkle with unsweetened shredded cocoanut
  11. Sesame oil, grated fresh ginger, chopped green onion
  12. Dijon mustard, white wine & tarragon
  13. Dissolve peanut butter in a little hot water, add chopped cilantro & a dash of hot sauce
  14. Barbecue Sauce
  15. Teriyaki Sauce
