SQUASH

DAILY POST JULY 18th:  SUMMER SQUASH BY ANY OTHER NAME

Here’s an assignment that can involve the entire family.  If you have children, treat it like a scavenger hunt.  Go to the green market and buy five different kinds of summer squash, green and yellow varieties described in today’s post.   Even if you only get a small one or two of each, make sure you buy more than just two kinds.

Bring them home and steam them lightly, then dig in and see if you can describe their distinctive identifying taste characteristics, such as:
Do some of them taste more ‘green’ than others?
Are some sweeter?  And are squash sweeter than other vegetables?
Can you detect the tenderness of the smaller squash?

This is a good way to begin to learn the fine distinctions between varieties of plants.
