BAKED APPLES

VEGETARIAN & GLUTEN-FREE
VEGAN
– Omit butter

GROCERY
Butter (omit if serving baked apples cold)
Sucanat
Nutmeg, preferably fresh
OPTION:  apple cider, heavy cream

LIQUOR
OPTION:  Rum or brandy

GREEN MARKET
Tart apple – like Granny Smith, Rome or Mitsu

T I M I N G

1 LARGE APPLE SERVES 1 or 2
PREPARATION TIME
:  10 min
COOKING TIME
: 30 min

  1. Preheat oven 350º F.
  2. Stuff apple w/butter & sucanat, creamed together.
  3. Add water, nutmeg & bake.

C O O K  /  P R E P A R E

INGREDIENTS
1 whole apple, cored
1 tsp butter
1/2 TBSP sucanat, or brown sugar
¼ c filtered water or cider
Dash nutmeg

COOKING

  1. Place apple in oven-proof dish.
  2. Cream together butter & sucanat; press into center of apple.
  3. Add water to dish; add nutmeg.
  4. Bake 20-30 min, depending upon size.  Done when knife inserts easily into apple.

S E R V E

Cut in half & serve, cut side down, hot or cold (better hot).  VARIATION: Drizzle 1 tsp heavy cream over apple.
ADULT VARIATION:  Warm a jigger (1 ounce) rum or brandy in small pan with a handle.  Ignite w/a match & pour over apple.  Serve quickly (it goes out quickly).
